When the DAVID BOWIE theme was announced, this was the first song to come to mind. I present to you "The Laughing Gnome", an obscure little gem from 1967. With Bill Shaouy on Harpsichord, Oboe and Bassoon, Steve Della Maggiora on Guitars, Dave Thake on Drums, myself on Bass and Vocals and David Epstein as the Gnome. Oh, and also the video. I chose most of the zombie gnomes and David animated the hero gnome's mouth for the chorus.
lyrics
I was walking down the High Street
When I heard footsteps behind me
And there was a little old man (hello)
In scarlet and grey, chuckling away
(Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... hoo hoo)
Well he trotted back to my house
And he sat beside the telly (cor!)
With his tiny hands on his tummy
Chuckling away, laughing all day (laughter)
Oh, you remind me of Klaus Gnome-i
(gnome-i)
Yes
(hahahahaha)
Ha ha ha, hee hee hee
I'm a laughing gnome and you can't catch me
Ha ha ha, hee hee hee
I'm a laughing gnome and you can't catch me
Said the laughing gnome
Well I gave him roasted toadstools and a glass of dandelion wine (burp, pardon)
Then I put him on a train to Eastbourne
Carried his cape, and watched while he vaped
(Oi’ve got’ a lungful of glycerine!)
Do you need more food for the trip?
(I’ve always got room for a little gnome chomp-ski!)
Oh, really?
In the morning when I woke up
He was sitting on the edge of my bed
With his brother whose name was Fred
He'd bought him along—but something was wrong
Get that thing off my bed!
Why’s it got more than one head?
(That's Fred; he’s got an abnormal “ge-gnome,” haha)
Ha ha ha, hee hee hee
I'm a laughing gnome and you can't catch me
Ha ha ha, hee hee hee
I'm a laughing gnome and you can't catch me
(Own up, I'm a gnome, ain't I right, haha)
What’s this big tangle of things on the floor here?
(That’s our gnome-ological network!)
Didn't they teach you to get your hair cut at school? you look like a Rolling Gnome.
(Then why doesn’t anyone come to my e-gnome-tional rescue?)
Now they're staying up me chimney
And we're living on caviar and honey (hooray!)
Cause they're earning me lots of money
Posting comedy bits that get lots of hits
And they… (what?)
And they also post lots of elfies, of course
Ha ha ha, hee hee hee
I'm a laughing gnome and you can't catch me
Ha ha ha, oh, dear me
Ha ha ha, hee hee hee
I'm a laughing gnome and you can't catch me
Ha ha ha, hee hee hee
I'm a laughing gnome and you can't catch me
(one more time, yeah)
